Maya Karin began her career in malaysia'a entertainment industry in 2000 when she accidently landed a job as an infotainment host on 'Wavelength' and soon after embarked on bigger adventures by signing up for the lead in the drama thriller 'Sri dewi Malam' followed by releasing her debut album 'Erti cinta' in the same year. In 2001 she was rewarded with winning public choice awards such as as 'Artis Baru Popular Anugerah Bintang Popular 2001' and 'Pelakon Baru Popular Anugerah Media Hiburan 2001' (Best New Artist Awards) as well as receiving 2 Music nominations for Best New Singer and Best Video at the Anugerah Industri Muzik 2002. She proceeded to host the highly popular wedding magazine program titled 'Ratu Sehari' as well as the beauty program 'Beauty Secrets from the East' as well shooting another movie 'Mr cinderella' in New Zealand. In 2003 her biggest break arrived in the shape of a triple role for acclaimed Malaysian director Shuhaimi Baba, in the heavily anticipated movie 'Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam' or Pontianak, scent of the Tuberose'. It was the first horror movie produced in Malaysia in 30 years and Maya's powerful performance as a restless vampire spirit seeking revenge, propelled her film and acting career to international fame winning Best Actress at the 49th Asia Pacific Film Festival (APFF) 2004 (Fukuoka, Japan) and Best Actress at the Estepona Fantasy and Horrorr Film Festival 2005 (Malaga, Spain) for the sequel 'Pontianak 2'. |
